Backend Engineer’s Journey Doing an Internship as a DevOps Engineer
How do I manage to do a DevOps internship while I am still in love with Backend.
Hello hello…! In this my very first internship story, I would like to share my journey doing an internship as a DevOps engineer. At the same time, I had never had any experience with DevOps stuff before. Without further wait, let’s get into it!
So, long short story, I found this internship offer on LinkedIn, and I decided to take a chance and apply for it. I will give you a spoiler that the internship offer is a “Backend Engineer Intern.” Yeap, you’re right! It’s not a DevOps intern offer, but it is a Backend. I sent my application, and two days later, I got the interview and… fortunately, I got the position. However, it turns out that I got moved to a DevOps engineer intern. Honestly speaking, I was disappointed at first (it kinda scare me since I had never had any experience with this before), but after thinking this was a precious opportunity, and not many companies are willing to offer interns with no experience at all, then I decided to take it.
Because I had never had any experience with DevOps stuff before, in the first couple of weeks, I need push myself to learn and understand a lot of DevOps stuff, such as Docker, Kubernetes, GCP, Terraform, and CI/CD pipeline. I’m not gonna lie; it’s hard as fuck. But whatever happens, I have made a decision, so I need to face it and be responsible. Fortunately, after a lot of struggle, I could understand most of the stuff, although not very deep. Afterward, I got my first task.
I can’t say much about my first task and the rest of the tasks (it’s confidential, of course, 😅), but all of them are related to Terraform, Helm, and Pipeline stuff. Most of the tasks (or perhaps all of them) are taking too much time that it needed. Yeah… since I’m new in this field, I need to learn about the material before I can dive deeper into the task and finish it. I even failed to complete some tasks, but at least I learned something new there. To make this internship perfect, the other five interns and I had an “Intern Day” on the last week of my internship. There, all of us talked about our three months of internship experience, and not only that, but we also had fun games with all of the employees. It was an awe-inspiring farewell gift 🎉🎉🎉.
Yup, I guess that’s all about my internship story. If you are afraid to start something new, you will never move forward and become a better person, so no matter what, face it and do your best. I hope you guys enjoy it and see you in my next story. Take care and bye-bye 👋👋👋
P.S. If you wonder where I did this internship, go ahead and find out more about this company, Fita. Thanks, Fita, for giving me such a wonderful journey ❤️
